While hiking in the woods or walking down a tree-lined street try and notice the different shapes and shadows the trees make on your path. What kind of images can you find? Pick a spot and observe the shapes and images as they shift with the wind, the passing of a cloud or the movement of the sun.
Now look up at the trees. Do some trees seem to dance lightly in the wind while others stay still and heavily grounded? How old do you think the trees are? What do you think they have witnessed? Are they all reaching straight up towards the sun or are some twisting and turning?
How many different types of leaves can you find? Are they grouped together or seem to be following alone in a line? How would you describe them?
What would your walk be like if all you ever saw was one kind of tree?
